Enter to win a behaviour-change intervention to reduce beach littering worth over £1000
Ahead of the 2019 UK bathing season, we would like to give away five sets of our latest litter intervention, shown to reduce littering on beaches by 26%. The intervention uses timely messaging at litter hotspots to increase awareness among beach visitors about the impact of land litter on beach and marine wildlife, and deter them from littering.
With the kind support of the Coca-Cola Foundation, Keep Britain Tidy over the course of 2018 has researched the issue of litter on UK beaches. We found that people often litter by leaving their rubbish next to full bins at beach exit points, rather than looking for an empty bin or taking their rubbish home with them. We also found that beach visitors want to know more about the impact littering such as this can have on our oceans and marine life, and are particularly concerned about this issue.
Keep Britain Tidy therefore developed and piloted an intervention that is designed to specifically deter people from leaving litter by the base of public bins and refuse collection points on beaches.
The pilot was carried out at three high profile UK beaches during summer 2018, and litter was monitored before and after the intervention was in place. The intervention reduced litter by an average of 26% and up to 59% at one beach. We also spoke to visitors at these beaches and 86% said the intervention will stop them from leaving litter at beaches in the future.
The Coca-Cola Foundation would like to award five UK beaches the ‘Bin it or take it home’ intervention to install in the run-up to the start of the bathing season in May. To enter this competition and give your beach the chance to win a toolkit please click through to this short application form to tell us how your beach could benefit from this intervention. Please return completed forms to email@example.com before 5pm on Friday 22nd February 2019.
Winning beaches will receive messaging:
- Stickers to be placed on bins
- Larger stickers to be placed around the base of bins
- A3 Correx signs to be placed in other locations on the beach
- Digital assets to be used on web and social media channels to support the intervention
- A digital ‘toolkit’ outlining how to implement your ‘Bin it or take it home’ intervention, which includes installation guidance, a brief for your stakeholders, and template press release and social media posts.
Keep Britain Tidy in partnership with the Coca-Cola Foundation will be officially launching the results of the intervention pilot in May, ahead of the 2019 bathing season. We will be sharing the names of the winning beaches in the associated press release and may approach them for comments relating to the intervention and the issue it is tackling.
