Beer sales help 13 Cornish beaches fly the flag

In part thanks to support from Sharp's brewery, 20 Blue Flags and Seaside Awards are flying over Cornish beaches this summer.

Rock-based Sharp’s Brewery is helping ensure that Cornish beaches are amongst the best in the world, helping to ensure the county has more iconic Blue Flags and Seaside Awards than any other part of England. In addition to being the national sponsor of Blue Flag around England, they are also providing vital funding to support Blue Flag and Seaside Award applications across Cornwall.

Blue Flags and Seaside Awards are only awarded to coastal destinations that boast the highest qualities of water, facilities, safety, environmental education and management. The full list of winners can be found here

Professional big wave surfer Andrew Cotton is the Sharp’s Brewery Blue Flag Ambassador for 2017.  He says, "The ocean is essentially 'my office' and almost every day of my life I’m in the sea or on a beach somewhere in the world, which means I’ve seen great beaches and unfortunately I’ve also seen those that aren’t so great.

"Before I got involved in this Blue Flag role with Sharp’s Brewery I had little idea of the extent of the work that goes into beaches gaining either a Blue Flag or Seaside Award. It really is a massive effort for the guys involved who are mostly volunteers and I feel pretty humbled now I know about all the work that goes on behind the scenes to raise the bar for British beaches. We’re so fortunate that we have so many of these best-of-the-best Blue Flag beaches in the South West and huge congratulations to all involved.”

James Nicholls, Senior Brand Manager at Sharp’s Brewery, said: "With Sharp’s Brewery being based in Rock, North Cornwall, the coastline and our beaches are deeply important to us. We are delighted to have supported the Blue Flag initiative over the last two years, raising over £28,000 through a 5p donation, per pint, of our exceptional, limited release beers.

"We are extremely proud to be supporting the coastal community again, helping these beautiful beaches obtain and retain the prestigious Blue Flag status and Seaside Awards that they so highly deserve. The Blue Flag Initiative does a fantastic job of supporting beaches and communities in coastal areas, and we are pleased to be supporting the charity again within our heartland of Cornwall."

This May and June, 5p from every pint of Rye Rock sold will be donated to the worthwhile cause, with the sale of the other limited edition beers to follow throughout the summer and into the autumn and winter.
