Teamwork is the key to Porthtowan’s success

This year Porthtowan beach in Cornwall was awarded both the Blue Flag Award and Seaside Award and it seems that working as a team, is the key to its success.

Local residents wanted to make sure that the beach was the best it could be, so the Porthtowan Beach Association worked together to improve the area and they were awarded the Blue Flag and Seaside Award as a result.

As a team they decided what improvements were required to update the beach and its facilities. The residents decided to:

  • Put up new signs for the beach (including signs in braille)
  • Provided an audio description of the beach on the Porthtowan Beach Association website
  • Improved access to the beach

Working hard as a community has been integral to the beaches success and the Porthtowan Beach Association recognise this. John Barrow who runs the Porthtowan Beach Association said: “Porthtowan has such a fantastic beach and it’s great to see it win national and international recognition. It’s brilliant that the whole community, with support from Keep Britain Tidy, sponsors and in partnership with Cornwall Council, has worked together to win this award.

Winning the Blue Flag Award as well as the Seaside Award is a brilliant achievement and a ringing endorsement of the exemplar standard of the beach environment at Porthtowan. It demonstrates that an inclusive partnership between Communities, Cornwall Council and our valuable sponsors not only works but also creates real value for everyone.”

Keep Britain Tidy’s Coastal Award manager Paul Todd said:  “It is great that we are able to award even more beaches across the UK with the Blue Flag and Seaside Awards this year. We are delighted that Porthtowan beach has achieved both awards again this year and the fact that the local community have come together and continually recognise areas they can update and improve the beach is fantastic. It’s amazing what a bit of teamwork can achieve.”
